We had planned last night, but this morning during my work-out (which ended abruptly a few reps shy of complete when my phone died and wouldn’t recharge outside) I remembered I had a meeting on Zoom. It was the final installment of my NCCAkron Dancing Lab Residency (read: really wanted to be able to culminate the residency). However, I needed WIFI from 2-4pm and that kind of put a wrench in things. We tried to be fluid, but we sometimes suck at that.
We planned on bringing Goat Dog (and we did) but she also makes things tricky sometimes. She isn’t allowed a lot of places and in Custer that meant “designated beaches,” which is kind of what we were planning on doing most of the day. However, we walked the little main street and a back street in Deadwood (looked like a tiny section of I-Drive near Disney (touristy!). Stopped at a lookout at Pactola Lake Reservoir and headed to Custer State Park to visit Sylvan Lake. We passed Sheridan Lake as well. But once we got to Sylvan Lake it was about time for my meeting and we had no service, so after returning to Hill City about 10 miles North of Sylvan Lake we found a cell tower near a pretty cool playground and the girls and Keith played for a couple hours while I worked in the car. There was a mad-dash attempt to head to Sheridan Lake because we thought I could get service there during a break in my meeting, but we were wrong and quickly reverted back to the playground. Also — No Dogs Allowed!
After my meeting we pivoted and headed to Crazy Horse. The beautiful sculpture in the side of the mountain was amazing. Goat Dog had to be held when inside (at least she was allowed, but it made our trip a little tricky/tiring (for Keith). Although it was later in the day when we hit Crazy Horse Memorial, everyone was a trooper.
As always: Make sure you wait for the photos and captions to load below! If the photos are too small and you want to zoom in don’t forget you can Cmd+/- on a Mac or Cntl+/- on a PC to zoom in/out your browser!
Deadwood chainsaw sculptures!; a new bug; “the place where Bill was shot”; horse-drawn carriage!; amphitheater rest with cartwheels; the high road away from the tourism; a panorama of deadwood from the high road!

Crazy Horse seemed to be busy. That was a good choice. Looks like the skies are clear. Glad to hear you have some coolness.
Yes, it was busy! It was 50 this morning and beautiful in MT!
